AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks is seeking 16skilled and qualified individuals willing to fully committo one year of service.AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks will accept applications from on July 26,2011              through August 19,2011.AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks staff will contact the most qualified applicants to schedule an initial interview.

The service term for all 16 positionslisted below will begin on or aboutOctober 1, 2011 through October 3, 2012(Please note that these dates are tentative and are subjected to change).Full-time members are required to serve 1700hours and part-time members are required to serve 900 hours during their twelve month service term.  

Generally, the schedule for members will consist of an 8 hour shift on weekdays, with some weekend and evening service hours as directed(shifts may vary for part-time members). Service hours will reflect the needs of the sponsoring organization and will vary from project to project. 

In addition, to the activities listed below, allAmeriCorps for the Adirondacks members will participate in volunteer recruitment, training, and outreach efforts.

In order to be eligible to serve withAmeriCorps for the Adirondacks you must meetall of the required qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalency
  • Be a U.S. citizenship or have authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Be able to successfully pass a criminal background check
  • Must be willing to commit fully to one year service term

 

Preferred Qualifications:

·         College degree

·         Be able to work independently and as a team

·         Have a valid driver’s licenses and your own transportation (desired)

·         Have basic computer skills, including Internet navigation, and social media

·         Be willing and ability to keep information confidential

Elizabethtown, NY

Name of Organization:          Adirondack Community Action Programs, Inc. (ACAP)

Organizations Mission:         Is to promote personal development, healthy interdependence and improved quality of life.

Members Service Activities:           

ACAP seeks a part-time AmeriCorps member with knowledge and an interest in Early Child Care/ Development to help build the capacity of its Afterschool Program(s).  The AmeriCorps member will work at one of ACAP’s (6) Afterschool Programs, which are located in the following school districts (Crown Point, Elizabethtown/Lewis, Westport, Willsboro, Moriah, and Schroon Lake).  The key responsibilities of ACAP’s AmeriCorps member will be to assist the Site Supervisor and Group Leaders in helping children with homework, and conducting educational/ learning activities including but not limited to playing games, providing nutritional and educational activities addressing childhood obesity, and promoting physical activities. Members Service Activities:

Families First in Essex County, seeks two part-timeAmeriCorps member(s) with experience in the human service field, especially with children who have special needs to build its capacity to teach youth and parents to be more self-sustaining. The key responsibilities of Families First in Essex Counties’ AmeriCorps member(s) will be assisting program staff with developing and implementing groups that focus on self-esteem, social skills development and encouraging physical activity and healthy eating habits. Name of Organization:          Lake Placid/Wilmington Connecting Youth & Communities Coalition(CYC)(Substance Abuse Prevention Team Essex County), (Lake Placid High School)

Organizations Mission:         CYC is a coalition of local counselors, parents, educators, law enforcement, public officials and other community members working to curb underage drinking, tobacco and drug use in the Lake Placid School District.

Members Service Activities:

CYC is seeking a part-timeAmeriCorps member who is able to take direction and has an interest in supporting and building the capacity of its partners: two youth centers, an evening study hour program at the Lake Placid High School, and student-created multi-media campaigns.  The key responsibilities of CYC’s AmeriCorps member will be to assist the Director of the evening study hours (6-9pm Mon.-Thurs.), assist staff of two Youth Centers in the supervision of youth and to work with the Coalition coordinator to help develop and implement educational programs/projects designed to educate the community in youth substance abuse prevention policies. Name of Organization:          Literacy Volunteers of America- Essex and Franklin Counties(LVEFC)

Organizations Mission:         To enable people (primarily adults) to achieve personal goals through literacy.

Members Service Activities:

Literacy Volunteers of Essex and Franklin Counties is seeking a part-timeAmeriCorps member with  experience in social networking, technology, program development, and implementation to strengthen LVEFC’s capacity to conduct effective and efficient community outreach and service.  The key responsibilities of LVEFC’s AmeriCorps member will be to work to strengthen community outreach, increase student/tutor retention rates, and to develop and implement new programs in underserved communities. This position does require travel to other site locations throughout the region (Saranac Lake and Lake Placid). A valid driver’s license and access to an automobile, is essential. Additionally, the AmeriCorps member will provide technical assistance and support through updating LVEFC’s website, social media outlets and increasing opportunities for LVEFC to host community events. Name of Organization:          Behavioral Health Services North, Inc. (BHSN)

Organizations Mission:         To strengthen individuals, families and our communities by delivering a behavioral health care and human service system that provides an integrated continuum of essential, responsive, and cost-effective services.

Members Service Activities:

BHSN is seeking a full-timeAmeriCorps member who possesses experience in marketing and is outgoing and not afraid of a challenge.  The AmeriCorps member will work with BHSN’s marketing department to create and implement a plan to ascertain the perception of BHSN throughout the tri-county region in order to design an-ongoing marketing plan for the agency and its 24 programs.  The key responsibility of BHSN’s AmeriCorps member will be to develop and implement strategies to obtain the information necessary to develop an agency wide marketing plan.  Activities will include but not be limited to hosting focus groups, conducting surveys, compiling and reporting data and designing and implement public awareness campaigns  other means as established with the Marketing Director and Development Committee of the Board of Directors.  For more information about BHSN, visit www.bhsn.org

CV-TEC is seeking a full-timeAmeriCorps member who is interested in education and counseling to build the capacity of its Literacy, GED and Training Programs. Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County is seeking a full-timeAmeriCorps member with an advanced degree and is proficient in the English language to build the capacity of its tutoring center.  The key responsibilities of the AmeriCorps member will be to recruit community volunteers, to assist or to coordinate tutor training, and to conduct follow up services.  Additionally, the AmeriCorps member will assist with conducting community outreach including but not limited to maintaining the organization’s social media sites and coordinating community-based outreach and fundraising events. Name of Organization:          North Country Center for Independence, Inc. (NCCI)

Organizations Mission:         The Mission of the North Country Center for Independence (NCCI) is to empower people with disabilities to live more independent and productive lives, and to promote beneficial policies and community understanding of disability issues.

            Members Service Activities: The North Country Center for Independence is seeking a part-time AmeriCorps member (individuals with personal experience of a disability and/or veterans are preferred)to provide independent living services and outreach to veterans with disabilities in Clinton and Essex Counties.  The key responsibilities of this AmeriCorps member will be to provide disabled veterans with direct counseling, education, information, and advocacy services both in NCCI office and at community locations.  Additionally, the AmeriCorps member will be responsible for planning and implementing a needs assessment, conducting group meetings, and documenting and reporting their outcome(s) to the Executive Director.  The AmeriCorps member will be required to collaborate with NCCI staff from time to time on events and activities involving NCCI as a whole.

 

Members Service Activities:  The North Country Center for Independence is seeking a part-time AmeriCorps member (individuals with personal experience of a disability are preferred) with strong computer and sound editing (Radio) skillsto build the capacity of the North East Radio Reading Services. The key responsibilities of this AmeriCorps member will be to create and manage play lists, download and edit audio files using Adobe Audition, and record and edit audio using Quick Record and Adobe Audition.  The AmeriCorps member will also be required to recruit, train and schedule volunteers to carry out the core tasks of the Radio Reading Program. Note: Past experience with sound editing is preferred, but not required. Name of Organization:          Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Center, SUNY

Organizations Mission:         Is to move an individual with any type of brain injury (i.e. acquired or congenital) toward greater independence and autonomy.

Members Service Activities:

The TBI Center is seeking two dynamic AmeriCorps member(s) who have an interest in developmental disabilities and brain injuries to build the capacity of the TBI Center’s program and participants. The ideal candidates for these position(s) must have friendly personality and be personally committed to the project.  The full-timemember will be assigned to the centers Cognitive Rehabilitation Program, Expeditionary Program, and Cooking Group. The part-timemember will be assigned to the Medicine Horse Group and one or more of the Social Groups.  The key responsibilities of both TBI Center’s AmeriCorps member(s) will be to support/guide participants as they engage in activities to ensure they are meeting targeted goals and outcomes.  The AmeriCorps member(s) will maintain daily notes of activities and document progress towards goals.  Additionally, the AmeriCorps member(s) will work to increase function in areas of communication skills, interpersonal skills, socialization, and sensory/motor skills, reduction/elimination of maladaptive behaviors, problem-solving and money management. Members Service Activities:

Paul Smiths College is seeking a part-time AmeriCorps member a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science/ Studies and experience in student programming to publicize the college’s sustainability efforts.  to develop and promote educational opportunities for both the Paul Smith’s student and local communities to foster a better understanding of the benefits surrounding sustainable living.    The key responsibilities of the AmeriCorps member will be to develop student programming and workshops related to campus sustainability.  The AmeriCorps member will coordinate student outreach efforts educating the local community outside of the college about sustainability and the initiatives at Paul Smiths.  Additionally, the AmeriCorps member will work to establish collaborative community partnerships with local educational and environmental organizations and will serve as a voting member of the Paul Smith’s Campus Sustainability Council and Garden Committee.  Finally, the member will collect and manage data regarding the college’s carbon footprint and update the college’s climate action plan.
